Here is a summary of our Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group's Historical Outreach Achievements for our 5th Marines from 2007 to present.

2007 to Present

  • Creation and upkeep of 5th Marine Regiment Memorial Garden in 62 Area – specifically OIF and OEF monuments and dedication ceremonies Renovations to 62 Area chapel – electrical, flooring, ceiling, paint, landscape
  • Present with Food and Beverages at Send off and Welcome Home Advance Party & HQ Company plus other Battalions Iraq and Afghan Wars
  • Wreaths/food for Memorials & receptions in the Memorial Park
  • Participated in Operation Rack Pack for homecomings
  • Sent over 3,500 Care and Comfort Boxes in country to Iraq and Afghanistan
  • Provided Supplemental Support for other BN Support Groups, i.e. care packages,  gift cards and toys for their holiday parties, 24 Shadow Boxes for 3/5 Fallen Families
  • Commissary gift cards for families in need, case-by-case basis
  • Gas cards/diapers for families in need, case-by-case basis
  • Individual Marine/family support – crisis response, case-by-case
  • Provided 100 tickets for the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach annually
  • Baseball tickets/etc when available
  • Contributed to the Regiment Christmas Party for food/Santa Suit/gift cards/toys
  • Family Day BBQs
  • Turkeys annually at holiday time
  • Bereavement needs
  • Truckloads of food/toys to the Marines and families
  • Ongoing Maintenance of the 5th Mar Memorial Park and Garden and Chapel areas

2009

  • Remodeled & Furnished (KVN) Family Readiness Room in the RIF
  • Helped Remodel CO, XO, and SgtMaj Offices
  • Remodeled Chaplain’s Offices, landscaped & irrigated exterior, refurbished Monument Sign-Interim OEF Tribute-Updated with Battalion Returns with Fallen.  Each time an update of fallen was made, a wreath was placed at the Tribute.
  • Sent sewing machines to Iraq at the request of Col Malay
  • Sponsored Dining Out for Col Malay
  • Contributed to the Regiment Christmas Party for food/gift cards/toys
  • Ongoing Maintenance of the 5th Mar Memorial Park and Garden and Chapel areas

2010

  • Creation, equipping of MCMAP “dojo” in RIF
  • Uniforms for Headquarters football team
  • 100 tickets to the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach
  • Oct – Dress giveaway birthday ball event.  Support group made outreach to community members, collecting gently used ball gowns for 5th Marines spouses/women to choose for dress giveaway event.  Support group supported the event with hair and makeup tips/tricks, food, beverage
  • Sponsored NCO Mess Night
  • Nov – financially contributed to the birthday ball
  • Nov – Coordinated Thanksgiving meal at Mahe’s Restaurant in Dana Point (175+ served) and free registration for DP’s Turkey Trot 5K and 10K races for 5th Marines and family runners
  • Dec – meal and volunteer support for unit Christmas party plus gift cards/toys
  • Ongoing Maintenance of the 5th Mar Memorial Park and Garden and Chapel areas

2011

  • July – Volunteers and event coordination assistance to RCT-5 Pre-Deployment Fair and Picnic Block party
  • Funded SNCO Mess Night
  • Uniforms for Headquarters football team
  • Aug – Volunteers and support for RCT-5 Advon and Main Body send-offs
  • “Operation Joining Forces” – created a program whereby deploying Marines and civilian community members were matched for the 12-month long deployment in order to provide care package, letter-writing, prayer, morale and family support. 143 Single Marines and families participated in the program.

  • Sept – Volunteers and support for Endless Summer Beach Party
  • Oct – Sponsored a baby shower (13 guests of honor): volunteers, event coordination
  • Nov – Coordinated Thanksgiving meal at Mahe’s Restaurant in Dana Point (175+ served) and free registration for DP’s Turkey Trot 5K and 10K races for 5th Marines and family runners
  • Dec – Volunteers, meal support, toys/gift cards and event coordination assistance to unit Holiday Party
  • Ongoing Maintenance of the 5th Mar Memorial Park and Garden and Chapel areas

2012

  • Mar – Support for Halfway to Home Mardi Gras Party celebrating the 6 month point of the deployment
  • Apr – Volunteers for Kickball Challenge Sports Day and picnic
  • May – Coordination assistance and volunteers for sailing trip for 50 unit family members
  • Uniforms for Headquarters football team
  • Welcome Home with ice cream/Sandwiches/drinks for the families
  • Welcome Home BBQ for Headquarters Marines & Families
  • July – Volunteers and cookie-baking for barracks-cleaning and preparation project for single Marines returning from deployment; volunteers and support for Advon homecoming
  • Aug – Volunteers and support for Main Body homecoming and Welcome Home BBQ, coordinated school supplies from another support org for families
  • Nov – Coordinated Thanksgiving meal at Mahe’s Restaurant in Dana Point (175+ served) and free registration for DP’s Turkey Trot 5K and 10K races for 5th Marines and family runners
  • Dec – Volunteers, gift cards/toys/ prizes and event coordination assistance for all-hands and families holiday party
  • Ongoing Maintenance of the 5th Mar Memorial Park and Garden and Chapel areas

2013

  • March- Provided lunch for the Wounded Warrior Trials for all the athletes  and officials
  • Apr – Headquarters baby shower – volunteer support, meal, prizes, seahorse keepsake gift and baby supplies gift baskets for all (15) moms-to-be  (Mailed to 2 Mom’s and 2 walk-ins.  19 total)
  • May – surf lessons for participating Marines and spouses, beach toys for kids, catered meal for all-hands and families beach luau.
  • Summer 2013- Sent 11 military kids to summer camp
  • June- Gave 5, $1,000 scholarships for college through the Officer’s Wives Club
  • Hail and Farewell Turner/Bohm/Nicholson at Jack’s Restaurant
  • June – Fundraised with all adoptive cities, but the lion share of funds came from DPSG to complete the monument and orchestrate its creation, transport, and installation.  Rehabilitated the Park and Picnic Area, Chapel grounds and painted all wood work in park and picnic area in anticipation of the monument coming
  • Operation Enduring Freedom Memorial Monument Dedication ceremony reception food
  • Turned the OIF monument in the Memorial Park
  • Contributed to the Regiment’s 97th Birthday at the Marriott Resort and Spa
  • “Battle to Business” Focus Group with 5 transitioning Marines leaving the Corps.  Pilot group shaped future programming.
  • July- Uniforms for Headquarters football team
  • Sailing Program for Children in Healthy Living
  • October Trunk or Treat family event on base.  Provided goodies and decorated cars for the event
  • Thanksgiving Dinner for 250 Marines & families at Stillwater Restaurant.  Provided raffle prizes and gift cards for the event
  • Free registration for DP’s Turkey Trot 5K and 10K races for 5th Marines and family runners
  • Holiday Event in December/toys/gift cards/baked goods and volunteers
  • Ongoing Maintenance of the 5th Mar Memorial Park and Garden and Chapel areas

2014

  • Remodeling of the Historic Father Capodano Chapel
  • Landscaping for the Command Post
  • January – Sent 6 former 5th Marines Wounded Warriors and spouses to the Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra Winter Camp for Skiing – This includes registration, housing, and transportation for Warrior and dependent.
  • March- Wounded Warrior Time Trials Provided Volunteers and snacks for the Cycling Event along with snacks for refueling.  Provided lunches for 175 Field and Track Competitors with assistance of 25 volunteers
  • Battle to Business- 1st General Meeting with 23 Marines in Transition.  Mentors in their field of interest were provided for 1 on 1counseling.  Additional help provided with resumes
  • February and March- Provided Socials in Dana Point and Cannons and Jack’s Restaurant for NCO Club and Officers Leadership Teams
  • March- Completion of NCO Club furnishings; TVs, Couches, paint, high top tables and bar stools for Fort Grizzly
  • April- Baby Shower- Showering new 5th Marine mothers/babies with gifts and lunch along with volunteers
  • May Regiment Wives Great Gatsby quarterly social for 5th Marine Regiment Headquarters Marines and wives.  To be held at Cannons Restaurant in Dana Point.  Providing a contribution towards the evening
  • June-Provided five (5)  $1,000 scholarships for children of Marines to go to college
  • All American Regiment-wide BarB-Que- Adoptive Cities together will be hosting
  • Summer 2014- DPSG will send our 5th Mar and Wounded Warriors children to Summer Camp
  • October- Trunk or Treat on Base
  • November- Thanksgiving Dinner for Marines and their families at Still Water Restaurant in Dana Point
  • December Annual Christmas Party
  • Family Readiness Officer, Kristy Turpin, is providing a series of on-going seminars for Marine wives over a period of 10 months.  DPSG provides food, presenters, gift cards, or other support as needed.
  • Ongoing Maintenance of the 5th Mar Memorial Park and Garden and Chapel areas
  • Sept 2014-April 2015 Support of the Marines of the SPMAGTF with care and comfort packages.  Sent over 750 boxes to the Middle East.  Support and Outreach to the families left behind
  • Provided gift cards for Gas and Commissary cards for 911 needs

2015

  • January- Sent 5 Marines and one Family Member  to the Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra Winter Camp for Skiing
  • March- Served 1000 “Meals for the Brave”- Catered a breakfast, lunch and dinner for the Wounded Warriors Marine Corps Trials at Camp Pendleton
  • Continuation……Sept 2014-April 2015 Support of the Marines of the SPMAGTF with care and comfort packages.  Sent over 750 boxes to the Middle East.  Support and Outreach to the families left behind
  • Flowers at the Memorial Park for Ramadi reunion/Memorial Day and other important occasions
  • April-  8 Welcome Homes; Coffee/sandwiches/snacks for the families as they waited for their loved ones return
  • April - Staff Day for Col Garcia and his NCOs; BBQ lunch, Stand up Paddle and Kayaking in Dana Point and happy hour for the staff at a local restaurant
  • April -  Farewell party for SgtMaj Wiggins
  • June- Dinner for a Pre-deployment briefing
  • June- Baby Shower for 11 Moms; baskets, games, lunch, prizes
  • June-  Hail and Farewell for Col Kassner and Col Bohm and families Jack’s restaurant.  Including command officers
  • June- Helped support Change of Command Col Bohm and Col Kassner
  • Ongoing Maintenance of the 5th Mar Memorial Park and Garden and Chapel areas
  • Pending       Remodeling of the Historic Father Capodano Chapel
  • August- Family Day at San Onofre for 350 Marines, Sailors, Families
  • August- Single Marine Day at Baby Beach- BBQ and Watersports
  • October- Wine and Canvas event for Spouses
  • November 13- Financial Support for 240th Marine Corps Ball
  • Thanksgiving Day- Free registration for DP’s Turkey Trot 5K and 10K races for 5th Marines and family runners
  • November- Thanksgiving Dinner for 300 Marines and their families at Waterman’s Harbor Restaurant in Dana Point
  • Hosted 2 Boat parade events for Single Marines and families to tour the Dana Point Harbor and enjoy the Christmas Boat Parade
  • Christmas with Santa at the Dana Point Yacht Club; Breakfast and fun for 24 families
  • December Annual Christmas Party; toys/gift cards/baked goods and volunteers
